"The Ancient Mariner" - Art Print (A4, A5)
This work is inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. The pose is borrowed from the famous statue in Watchet, Somerset (as good as any life model). Death looms large in this poem with brilliant paranormal scenes describing the Grim Reaper bartering with the Pale Lady for the lives of the Mariner and his crew. The dead albatross, tethered to the mariner encapsulates many of the poem's primary themes, in particular superstition, remorse and the torturous fear of death. I have used the ‘X’ symbol multiple times to represent literal and thematic references to death and mortality.
