"Metamorphosis" - Art Print (A4, A5)

Meet Mr Samsa, the original “Brundle Fly”. This is a book cover for fans of Franz Kafka’s timeless novella Metamorphosis, which tells the story of a man who turns into an insect overnight. Since the book is full of metaphors and symbolism, I interpreted this with an ‘insect-as-conscience’ visual approach, with a small bug perched on the end of his pipe. The man's eyes are far apart, offering not only stylistic distinction but also the subtle suggestion to the placement of an insect's eyes (note the shadows beneath his hat are partially formed into the outline of an insect’s head). Finally, his tie has an insect pattern which serves as literal and thematic foreshadowing.
